Joel Romo

BBQ Pit Master

Hailing from America’s Southwest, barbecue has been in Joel Romo’s blood ever since his father first introduced him to ribs as a kid. His love for the craft began at Jack’s Barbecue - a small, family-run joint on the south side of town. Out back, a brick wood-fired pit slow-cooked ribs and all the traditional favourites to perfection.

Joel still remembers that first plate from Jack: BBQ pork ribs, a side of beans, sliced white bread, and a bottle of their signature sauce. His dad showed him the proper way to eat ribs - by hand, leaving no meat on the bone - and that day became a rite-of-passage moment. The tender, slow-cooked meat, rich smoky flavour, and tangy sauce made it clear that barbecue wasn’t just food; it was a way of life.

From that moment on, Joel developed a sharp eye for spotting the real deal. He set his standards high and learned that once you find a genuine BBQ spot, you’ll catch yourself rearranging your workday or weekend just to roll in right on time for lunch. For Joel, great barbecue is more than a meal - it’s a tradition worth chasing. We have known the guys from JRs smoke house for over a decade and love having them at all our events.
